The secret to navigating around Venice, Italy

Throw away your map & get lost!

That is what a local told us the first day we arrived, and it was exactly the kind of suggestion we hoped for. Venice, the first stop on our #italylovetour.

The day took us through little allies, over bridges, past genuine mask shops, and inside the best local restaurants/cafes!

After flying for over 13 hours, with one stop in Portugal (where the airline broke one of my luggage wheels, but that's another story), we finally arrived in Venice!! Cris and I were tired and coming down with a small cold, due to people sneezing and coughing on the plane, but luckily she packed extra vitamins.. one of the many reasons why I love her ;)  Our AirBnB was right across the water in a town called Mestre, so getting to the main island of Venice we had to catch a train.  The cost of this train ride was only 2.5euros per person, roundtrip! Now THAT is a deal.  As soon as we stepped out of the Venice train station it felt like we were on a movie set!  Venice looks EXACTLY how I imagined it.  Middle of August, so the weather was hot hot hot, hence the little fan I'm holding in most of my pictures Lol.  So long story short, we walked around for a bit and met a local who said to us...

"Do you want to know the secret to navigating around Venice? Lose the maps, and get lost!"

The Scenic Traveler visiting tips??

  • Visit for a minimum of 3 nights (we were only there for 2, and wished for that extra day)
  • Stay on the main island (if you want easier walkable access to everything)
  • WEAR comfortable walking shoes (breathable material in the summer)
  • Use the water taxis if you wander too far & need to catch a train at a certain time.
